This scarf has a unique, one-off mathematically generated pattern that is knit into it, made from black and white merino. It is one possible output of Rule 90, one of the rules of the 1D CA called Elementary Cellular Automata. Rule 90 is related to a Sierpinski triangle in that it creates a Sierpinski triangle if started from a single pixel in the generating row (but this scarf has many pixels in the generating row). This scarf was programmed, industrially machine knit, and hand finished, all in Seattle, WA. The yarn used is a 100% merino wool, spun and dyed in the USA. Ships with source code in Processing for the exact pattern knit into the scarf. The model is wearing a different output of a different rule, not this exact scarf. The images without the model are of the exact scarf you will receive.
This is a seconds quality item, as the colors were knit inverted by mistake (the yarn cones were physically switched on the machine) and the white forms the starting and final border. It is knit color inverted to the software generated image from the code that ships with the scarf. Otherwise, it has no flaws. It is still a unique item as we never knit the same item twice, even when there are errors. This scarf is fully reversible, with the opposite colors on the back from the front. 7.5 inches wide by 75 inches long. Hand wash with wool wash or dry clean only. This is a finished item that is ready to ship. Please note that we can't estimate how long this item will take to get through customs for orders outside of the USA. Get cozy in this generative knit!
